Secondary Prevention of Small Subcortical Strokes (SPS3)
SPS3 is a study for persons who have experienced a small subcortical stroke also known as a lacunar stroke. The main goal of this study is to learn more about preventing another stroke from happening to people who have already had a subcortical stroke. We also want to learn how to prevent problems with thinking and memory decline that may happen after a stroke. This study is testing if taking both aspirin and clopidogrel will be more effective in preventing another stroke than just aspirin alone. As well, this study is seeking information about the best level of blood pressure control after a stroke.
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Washington, D.C., is sponsoring this study.
SPS3 is taking place in over 60 different medical centers around the United States, Canada, Latin America, and Europe. In order to answer these important questions, we need 3000 people to participate in this study. The goal of the study is to include at least 20% Hispanics as this type of stroke is thought to be more common in Hispanics than other populations.
